Drivers kicked off the Labor Day weekend with racing action Friday evening, September 4, with 3 of the 4 feature winners making their first trip of the season to the winner's circle.

The only familiar face in victory lane was 'Rapid' Ronnie Hill of Sharon Springs.  Jeff Welsh appeared to be on his way to a win in the IMCA Modified A-feature, only to have a motor expire after taking the white flag and bringing out a caution.  That set up a green-white-checkered finish and give Hill the lead on the restart, which he held to the checkers for his second win of the season at the 3/8-mile oval.  Second heat winner Clinton Hockersmith finished in the runner-up spot, followed by Jason Schoenberger, Chris Vogan and heat three winner Dave Hardesty.  Marty Clark and Corey Lagroon also won heat races.

Lenora's Jay Hachmeister made only his second appearance of the season at Hays, and after winning the third heat race, came back to win the IMCA Stock Car feature.  Terry Cunningham's second place finish gives him a one point lead over Cory Struckhoff, who finished fifth, in the point standings.  Mike Wadel finished third and Cole Wilson fourth.  Trevor Wadel and Dustin Daniels were victorious in the other two heat races.

Hometown driver Luke Pfannenstiel was also a double winner.  Luke won the second IMCA Hobby Stock heat, then held off heat one winner Jerry Hudson at the checkers to win the feature race.  Point leader B.J. Dauer finished third, followed by Cody Williams and Cody Graham.

The URSS 305 Sprint Cars made their final appearance of the season for 2009 and Kansas City's Corey Lutters scored his first win a the 3/8-mile track.  Lutters led the field the first three laps before father Ken Lutters took the point.  Corey then used lapped traffic to his advantage to regain the lead on lap 14.  A couple of cautions kept the field close late in the race but Corey held on for the victory.  C.J. Johnson got by Jason Martin on the final lap to finish second, with Brian Herbert and Darren Bowman rounding out the top five.  Heat race winners were Cody Salem, Barry Crane, Herbert and Jon Johnson.  C.J. Johnson and Willie Wynn were victors in the 2 B-mains.

The evening's race sponsor was Auto World.

Racing action returns to the speedway on Friday, September 18, for fan appreciation and track championship night.  All five IMCA-sanctioned classes will be in action, the modifieds, stocks, hobby stocks, sport compacts and northern sport mods.  Race time is 7:30pm.
